Japan Weather & Train Update Before You Travel

Before traveling in Japan, it is a good idea to check the latest weather forecast and train service information before leaving your hotel or home.

Heavy rain, strong winds, typhoons, snow, accidents, and other unexpected events can sometimes affect train schedules, buses, flights, and outdoor attractions.

For the most accurate information, use official sources. The Japan Meteorological Agency provides weather forecasts and warnings, while JNTO Japan Safe Travel Information brings together useful safety information for international visitors. If you are traveling on JR East, check the official JR East Train Status Information; for other railways, use the operator’s official website or app.

Search directly: weather, train routes and maps

Weather: Open the JMA destination weather forecast and select the area you plan to visit. Use the JMA English weather information page to find weather warnings and advisories as well as forecasts.

Train and transportation routes: Use the Japan Travel by NAVITIME route planner. Enter your departure station, destination and travel date/time to compare routes and connections. A planned route does not confirm that trains are running normally: check your operator’s service notices separately, such as JR East train status for JR East journeys.

Maps and directions: Open Google Maps, search for your hotel, station or attraction, then choose Directions. Enter your starting point and select public transport or walking to plan the next part of your journey.

Quick weather and transport checklist

• Check the forecast and any weather warnings for both your starting point and destination.
• Confirm your railway operator’s service status before heading to the station, especially after heavy rain, strong winds, snow, or an earthquake.
• Keep an alternative route or destination in mind if outdoor attractions or mountain transport may be affected.
• Allow extra travel time and keep your phone charged so you can check official updates while you are out.
