New Chitose Airport to Sapporo: Train, Bus & Taxi Guide (2026)
The JR Rapid Airport train is the best choice for most travelers. It takes about 35 to 40 minutes from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo Station and runs every 10 to 15 minutes in the daytime. A limousine bus takes longer but can drop you closer to your hotel.
New Chitose Airport is about 45 kilometers from central Sapporo, so you cannot just walk out and take a subway. The good news is that the trip is simple, and most visitors use the train.
This guide compares the train, the bus and a taxi, with times, costs and tips for getting to your hotel.
Train: JR Rapid Airport
The train station is underground, below the airport terminal building. Follow the signs for JR trains and take the Rapid Airport to Sapporo Station.
- Time: about 35 to 40 minutes. The fastest services take around 33 minutes.
- How often: every 10 to 15 minutes in the daytime.
- Fare: about ¥1,230 for a standard seat. Fares have changed in recent years, so check the price on the ticket machine or the JR Hokkaido website.
- IC cards: Suica, ICOCA, Pasmo and Kitaca work for the standard fare. See our Suica guide.
- Rail passes: the Japan Rail Pass and Hokkaido Rail Pass cover this train. Check your pass before you travel.
The JR station is inside New Chitose Airport and connected to the domestic terminal. If you arrive at the international terminal, follow the signs to the connecting walkway and allow extra time with luggage. Most travelers find the train the simplest way to get from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo, especially on a first visit.
Some trains have a reserved-seat car called U-Seat, which has space for luggage. It costs extra, and IC cards cannot be used for the reserved-seat part.

With a large suitcase, choose the reserved-seat car or a quieter train outside rush hour. Standard cars can get crowded in the evening.
Bus: airport limousine
Limousine buses run between the airport and central Sapporo about every 10 minutes. They stop near Sapporo Station, Odori, Susukino and many hotels, so you may not need to change trains or walk with your luggage.
- Time: about 70 to 90 minutes. Traffic and weather can make it longer.
- Fare: roughly ¥1,300 to ¥1,500, depending on the route. Check the current fare with the bus company.
- Best for: travelers whose hotel is near a bus stop, or who want to avoid stairs and train changes.
You can check routes and stops on the Chuo Bus website.

Taxi
A taxi is the easiest door-to-door choice, but it costs many times more than the train or bus and can be slow in heavy traffic. It makes sense for a group sharing one car, or if you arrive very late.

Which Is Best?
- Fastest and most reliable: the JR Rapid Airport train.
- Closest to your hotel: the limousine bus.
- Late arrival or a group of 3 to 4: a taxi.
Heavy snow in winter can delay trains and buses. If your flight lands late or the weather is bad, check service updates before you leave the airport. The New Chitose Airport website and JR Hokkaido list current information.
Tips for Travelers
- Keep your passport and luggage tags handy. Airport lines can be long right after landing.

Where to Stay in Sapporo
Most visitors stay near Sapporo Station or Odori, both close to the train and the subway. Sapporo Station is the easiest for arrival, because the airport train goes straight there. Susukino is better for food and nightlife, and Odori Park is central for sightseeing. Compare prices before you book.
