Chichibu Night Festival 2026 Dates

The Chichibu Night Festival is held every year on December 2 and December 3. December 2 is the quieter Yoimiya or eve festival, while December 3 is the main festival day and the busiest time to visit.

  • December 2, 2026: Yoimiya / eve festival
  • December 3, 2026: Main festival
  • Main area: Around Chichibu Shrine and central Chichibu

The detailed 2026 timetable, traffic restrictions, temporary facilities, and fireworks program may be released closer to the festival. Check the official Chichibu Tourism Association information before you travel.

Festival Highlights

The festival is famous for six richly decorated floats: two kasaboko and four yatai. During the main festival, the floats move through the streets accompanied by traditional festival music and large crowds.

A major highlight on the evening of December 3 is the dramatic pull up Dangozaka, a steep slope near the festival’s climax area. The festival’s float events and kagura are part of the group of Japanese float festivals registered by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.

December 2: Yoimiya

December 2 is generally less crowded than the main festival day and can be a good choice if you want a more relaxed atmosphere. Four yatai floats are typically taken through the city, and evening festival activity continues into the night.

This day can be easier for photography and walking because the crowds are usually lighter than on December 3.

December 3: Main Festival

December 3 is the main festival day. All six floats appear, and the atmosphere becomes much busier as evening approaches. The procession and nighttime float movement are the main reasons many visitors choose this date.

Fireworks are also traditionally part of the festival, but the exact 2026 program and launch times should be confirmed once the official schedule is published.

How to Get There from Tokyo

The most convenient route for many visitors is the Seibu Railway from Ikebukuro toward Seibu-Chichibu Station. Another option is to travel via JR and Chichibu Railway, depending on where you start in Tokyo.

For broader route planning, see our Chichibu Day Trip from Tokyo guide and Chichibu Travel Guide.

Because the festival draws very large crowds and traffic restrictions are expected, train travel is much easier than driving. In previous years, extra late-night train services have operated on December 3, but you should confirm the 2026 timetable before relying on them.

Crowds, Weather & Practical Tips

  • Arrive early: December 3 becomes extremely crowded toward evening.
  • Use trains: Road congestion and traffic restrictions make driving inconvenient.
  • Dress warmly: Chichibu nights in early December can be very cold.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: Expect long periods of standing and walking.
  • Charge your phone: Maps and train information will be important late at night.
  • Check the last train: Do not assume late services will be identical every year.
  • Follow crowd-control instructions: Some streets and viewing areas may have restricted access.

What Else to See in Chichibu

If you have more time, Chichibu has enough attractions for a full day or overnight stay. Popular options include Chichibu Shrine, Hitsujiyama Park, local temples, mountain scenery, and nearby Nagatoro.

FAQ

When is the Chichibu Night Festival in 2026?

The festival is held on December 2 and 3 every year. In 2026, the main festival day is December 3.

Which day is better: December 2 or December 3?

December 2 is generally better if you prefer lighter crowds. December 3 is the main event and has the biggest procession atmosphere, but it is also much busier.

Is the Chichibu Night Festival a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes, but because the main highlights happen at night, you should plan your return train carefully. Staying overnight in or near Chichibu can make the evening less rushed.

Do I need tickets?

Much of the street festival can be viewed without a general admission ticket. However, special reserved viewing arrangements may be offered separately, so check the official festival information closer to the event.

Final Thoughts

The Chichibu Night Festival is one of the most memorable winter events near Tokyo. If you want the full atmosphere, December 3 is the main day; if you prefer an easier experience, December 2 can be more comfortable. Either way, check the latest official schedule and transport information shortly before your trip.
